Important Facts About the Pilot Shortage

Since 2010, all but the 32 largest U.S. airports have lost both air service frequency and destination options.

Worsening air service loss due to lack of pilots will hit smaller communities disproportionately.

More than 180 airports have lost more than 25% of their air service from Sidney, MT to White Plains, NY to Cedar Rapids, IO. Eight communities have lost all air service.

There will be a global gap of 34,000 pilots by 2025, consulting firm Oliver Wyman reports. “In North America, with an aging pilot population and heavy use of early retirements, the shortage reemerges quickly and is projected to reach over 12,000 pilots by 2023.”

There aren’t enough pilots to meet forecasted demand for air travel, FAA forecasts. As a result, communities across the US face dramatic and worsening air service loss. FAA: airlines need 13,000 new pilots in 2022 to meet demand.

“On average, just 6,335 new pilots have qualified per year since 2013”.

The median annual wage for US pilots is $202,180 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay raises alone has not stopped the pilot shortage from worsening.

Nearly half of today’s pilots are approaching retirement at age 65. Restoring the pilot supply is not just about attrition during the pandemic, but also about future shortfalls.

The pilot shortage can be safely solved. Join us to find out more on how to help.
